Parenting Tweens and Teens - Always a Changing Game

No way is it 2010 already! Didn't we just do the Y2K thing? Is it just me or is 24 hours really not as long as it used to be? And what about our kids? They're growing up at warp speed. Probably a blessing we're all too busy to notice them morphing into young adults before our eyes, otherwise how scary would that be? Of course, when it comes to other people's kids, you can't miss the changes, but with our own... most of us have a terminal case of blind spots. Unfortunately, turning a blind eye to reality isn't the most effective way to parent.

Life is all about change and our ability to deal with it. Our bodies, our feelings, our kids, our relationships, our life situation... all constantly changing. (So are all the molecules on your kitchen table, but we can save that for another time.) The more I meditate and breathe and read and write and think and teach, the clearer the changing nature of life becomes. The more I twist my torso into improbable positions (Hey, it's not painful, it's yoga!) the more I learn how flexibility is the best tool I've got going for me.

"Steady in the winds of change," my yoga teacher says. Steady as she goes. Steady, strong, centered. Those are the keystones to effective parenting. But steady doesn't mean "stuck" and true strength requires insight into what's needed right now.

Suppose you've always had a close relationship with your 12-year-old daughter. She's been a kid who's never held back from telling you everything she thinks and feels. You've prided yourself on the closeness you two share and how relationship reflects so positively on your parenting skills. Then one day you walk past her room and the door's closed. You go in. She's listening to music and reading. "Hi Dad," she grins, not removing her headphones.

You sit on the bed. "Hi, sweetheart. So tell me, what's new with you?"

"Nothing."

An awkward silence follows.

"You want something, Dad?"

You shake your head and slowly walk toward the door. "Dad," your daughter says sweetly, "Next time could you please knock?"

"Sure, honey," your smile belies the ice pick skewering your heart. In the hallway your mind reels. Why should I have to knock at my own child's door?! We've never had closed doors between us! She must be hiding something. I'm going back in there and demand that she tell me what's going on. I couldn't talk to my father about anything that really mattered, so I'm going to make damn sure that my daughter...

WAIT!

What's going on here? Is this about your 12-year-old's normal desire for some privacy and respect or is it about your own fear that your relationship with your child is changing into... who knows what?

Should you zig or zag? If you zig only because it's how you've always reacted when you're hurt then you're not paying attention to your child's needs. Nor are you awake to the parenting challenge in front of you. An unwillingness to change in spite of changes happening all around is a sure-fire formula for unhappiness. The result will be internal struggles and plenty of ongoing conflicts with your ever-changing tween or teen.

What to do? How about going for a walk? An actual walk is great if you can swing it, but any conscious choice to take a head-clearing break will help. While you're in the self-imposed time out ask yourself:

What does my child need from me now? It's an essential question whenever you feel stuck in your parenting mission. Children's behavior at any time, any age, broadcasts a need. Your job is to identify their need as accurately as possible then offer your help. Of course, there's no formula that will always work because their needs constantly change. One moment she'll need a hug and an encouraging word. Another moment he'll need a sympathetic ear and no words from you at all. One time they'll need you to set clear limits with unambiguous consequences for noncompliance. Another time they'll need you to respect the meaning of a closed door without taking it personally.

Where do your needs as a parent come in? That depends. You're absolutely within your rights to have your role, your values, your rules and your property respected. Those are valid needs. But when you need to be needed by your child or you need to use your child to look good in the eyes of others, that's unhealthy. Always be an adult and take care of your own changing needs as best as you can. Your kids have a big enough job growing up and learning to take care of themselves without having to take care of you too.

Change is our constant companion on this journey we call life. Our kids are the clearest evidence of that. They're rapidly developing into the independent young adults. As parents we're privileged to have an essential role in their unfolding. If we pay close attention we get to witness parts of the process. We also have the honor of helping them become who they are. Part of the reward is an opportunity to learn and grow along with them.

It's a new year. Change is the air we breathe. The best we can do for ourselves and our family is to remain as steady as possible. It also helps to keep your eyes, your mind, and your heart open. That's what our kids need most from us.

The Gentleman's Game - Or Why Jamaica Won't Qualify for the 2010 World Cup

A few weeks ago, I went out for a beer with a few friends. We visited an Irish pub and, of course, there was soccer on the tube. Our discussions eventually led us back to, shockingly, soccer. We made a conversational foray into Concacaf qualifying and discussed who the most likely teams to qualify for it were.

One of the gang was a Jamaican fellow, a soccer fan, and a despairing Jamaican national team fan. I admitted him to him my constant frustration with the Jamaican National Team. I've never watched Jamaica play a soccer game without screaming at the TV "SHOOT THE BALL! SHOOT IT! STOP PASSING! SHOOOOOOOOOT!" I learned that night that I'm not the only one who feels that way.

We discussed the reasons for Jamaica's lack of success the last 10 years. Despite their enjoyable and skilled brand of soccer, Jamaica hasn't appeared in the World Cup since 1998 and failed to advance past Caribbean Cup qualifying most recently - leading to their loud absence from the 2007 Gold Cup. While certainly there are socioeconomic factors at play and the fact that Jamaica's national side isn't overly well-funded and has a paucity of soccer players playing their club soccer outside of Jamaica, there's something else amiss.

The theory proposed by my Jamaican companion at the bar was that Jamaica regards soccer as a "gentleman's game". What he meant by this can be simplified to mean that the Jamaican side seems to feel obligated to have every player participate in every possession and also that the Jamaican defense allows the opposition an opportunity to manuever with the ball. In short, each player gets a fair chance with the ball. In terms of a code of honor, it's comparable to tossing an unarmed man a weapon before engaging in combat.

This approach leads to creative passing and attractive soccer. Every time I've played soccer with Jamaican players, I could rest assured that my ball-hogging nature would be appeased. Short passes and adept ball control always seemed to be the priority. This certainly leads to each player feeling involved in the games, but what it doesn't lead to is shots, goals, or victories.

Although I would be willing to bet decent money that Jamaica is consistently outshot and outfouled by opponents, I admit that this argument can be punched full of holes due to lack of empirical evidence. For the life of me, I couldn't find shot statistics for Jamaica's games in the last two years -please email me if you can find these stats.

However, I have a few things to support my arguments. First, my own eyes. Jamaica never seems to take shots and passes up opportunities that present themselves. The soccer is pretty, the passing is gorgeous, but it ends up looking like a poor man's Brasil.

Second, I have the results from Jamaica's last couple of years of play. Now, it's vaguely possible that Jamaica is taking 100 shots a game amd converting none of them, but that's about as likely as Carlos Ruiz going a game without diving.

In 2006, Jamaica played 6 international friendlies, only managing to win one while allowing 14 goals compared to a paltry total of 5 scored. In 2007, over a stretch of 9 friendlies, Jamaica chalked up 3 wins and 10 goals, while conceeding 17 goals and 5 losses. Hardly the two year record of a team ready for the World Cup.

With the rehiring of Rene Simoes amd some up and coming young strikers in the players pool like Shelton and Bryan, Jamaica seems to think they have a lot of momentum heading towards qualifying than in the last ten years.

I'm certainly not going to discount them totally at this stage. Jamaica has talent and drive going for them. However, until they embrace a ballhog, until they learn to stop passing the ball and take a few shots, they won't qualify for the World Cup.

Soccer Songs That Make the Game More Exciting

Soccer songs are well-known all over the world. They bring more intensity to the sport which has long been associated with thrill and excitement. Football chants are combined with lots of gimmicks to boost the confidence of the various football teams. Soccer is the most watched and followed sport in the world so that every fan wants to be a part of it in any way they can.

In Argentina, Brazil, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea and many other countries, people play soccer, watch soccer games, and even sing football songs in public places. Soccer is often the topic friends discuss over meals and soccer news is read in every street corner. Practically, soccer has been a constant part of the people's lives and in several countries the game has even become a part of their culture. Football right now is already more than just a leisure activity. It is a way of life.

The loud singing and cheering inject a unique form of excitement and exhilarating suspense to the out field. A die-hard fan enjoys soccer games more when he or she shares something in common with the crowd. A soccer chant or song can express a fan's devotion to his/her favorite soccer team. The songs featured in the game inspire not only the players but the spectators or fans as well. Such a state makes every second of the game special and worthwhile.

Soccer songs are fun. These songs are mostly in the form of pop songs which talk about football success or sport success in general. They make the game a more exciting sport. They make soccer more fascinating.

Football Center Position - Four Golden Tips in Improving Your Game

The center fielder in the game of football is overlooked as an important character, and yet this position leads the offensive linemen in energy and plays. The center's biggest responsibilities include hiking the ball to the quarterback, and blocking the defense. This articles purpose is to bring out four ways that you can improve your game as a football center. First, understand the importance of your position. Second, increase your endurance with running drills. Third, increase your strength with weight lifting. Fourth, learn and master the playbook plays.

The importance of a football center position

In many cases it is just as important to remember your importance on the field as it is to practice your position. The centers role is vital in starting the play correctly with a good snap. Though rare, a bad snap can totally ruin the chances of a well executed play. Make sure that you are communicating with the quarterback about the snap. Is is a hand off or a NFL snap? Also, once the play begins you are the for runner in blocking the defense and opening routes for the running back. A good center ensures good starts and great blocks. A bad center can cause a loss of yards, fumbles, and quarterback sacks.

Increase your endurance with running drills

Endurance is the name of the game when it comes to football, and running will help you endurance grow. Running drills will help you gain stamina so that you will be able to play to your full extent throughout the game. Even with all of these benefits you will notice that most of the complaints in practice come from running drills. Just remember that in the end it is the fastest that win games. Running has a final help to your team, and that is learning how to push beyond your limits, you will be surprised how often that happens in football, and in life!

Increase your strength with weight lifting

Lifting weights is a fundamental requirement to improve your football skills. Not only will it add muscle to your body and increase your strength, it will also help you to increase your maximum power. Maximum power differs in importance to strength due to the fact that it is exertion during play and not just muscle mass. This exertion will help you as a football player to execute your skills on the field with speed and force. We highly recommend working with a personal trainer when weightlifting to insure that you are doing it properly, and to help you design a program that will fit your position.

Learn and master the playbook plays

Every football team will have certain plays. It will be essential to learn your part in that play to benefit yourself, and the whole team. Because football plays can be intricate, it is important that you understand and follow the coaches instructions. A lot of habits can form in the first couple of practice plays, for this sake it is a good idea to take them slow at the start. Practice is a great time to get some extra help, so if you are struggling with a certain play remember that your coaches are their to help you master the techniques. Always, always ask for the help that you need. Are you done with the play after practice? No way! the best thing that you can do after practice is visualize your plays. Sleep on them, and you will learn them twice as fast.

Conclusion

As you apply these four tips into your position as football center you will find that you have a greater passion for the position, increased strength and endurance, and a well thought plan of action. In the end it is a team that achieves victory, and that team is made up of several positions doing what they do best.

Wushu, Accepted As Olympic Game Event

Wushu is practised all over China and is an important component of the cultural heritage of the country. Most visitors to China are deeply impressed by the tremendous popularity of wushu in this country. If you take a walk in the morning, you will see people practicing wushu barehanded or with weapons in parks, at the shore, or on roadside open grounds. Marked by callisthenic beauty and rhythm, their movements follow set patterns that are designed more for health-building than for self defense.

Wushu, which is sometimes called kung fu abroad, has developed over a long historic period. It can be traced back to pre-historical times. In order to survive the extremely hostile environment, our ancestors have to learn some primary means of attack and defense to fight against wild animals and among themselves. Moreover, they generally knew how to fight with weapons made from stones and wood or bare-hand fighting. This is considered to be the origin of wushu.

Wushu represents the spirit of Chinese culture and art. According to the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine, wushu exercises consist of both "external" and "internal" work. The former means movements of the body, the hands and the feet and expressions of the eyes, and the latter is related to "the spirit, willpower, vital energy and strength." The two aspects are combined as movements are guided by consciousness so as to achieve "a unity of body and mind."

There are hundreds of styles and routines in wushu, each with its own distinctive features. Generally speaking, Shaolin style and Wudang style are the two most famous styles. Both of them lay emphasis on the external practice for genuine energy, vital energy and spirit and internal practice for muscle, bone and skin. Long-Range Shadow Boxing is characterized by speed and vigor, while taijiquan is noted for its slow and gentle movements. The humorous zuiquan describes a drunkard who is drunk in appearance but not in mind and is sober enough to outwit his opponent.

However, as wushu is becoming worldwide popular, it's a common wish of all Chinese people to watch wushu competitions at the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2008 Olympic Games, wushu is neither an official event nor performing event, but is allowed to hold an international competition under Olympic Organizing Committee's permission.
