Common Wealth Games 2010 - A Reality Check!

The countdown has begun for the country that is 7th largest in area, 2nd largest in population and 5th largest in terms of trade.

The countdown is ticking for a nation that still looks like a messy construction site with roads filled with rubbles, new construction boards pulled up every week, beggars and thieves lurking in every corner, and common man grumbling over rising taxes to pay for the Common Wealth Games.

Indeed, Delhi hasn't looked such cluttered before, in spite of day and night preparations to present it in its Sunday best. Come October and 8,000 athletes, over 10,000 visitors and 30,000 volunteers would land in Delhi from 71 different countries. But, are we both as a nation and as individual citizens prepared for the BIG event?

Let's have a reality check...

Is the Infrastructure Ready?

Common man knew from the year 2003 that the Games are coming. Yet, the government sprung into action just over a few months back, when the clock's hand started ticking harder in its head.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "He that rises late must trot all day." And that is just the case here. Since the start of the construction, dozens of construction workers have died and even today thousands are laboring in unsafe conditions. Michael Fennell, the head of the Commonwealth Games, has openly expressed his disappointment with the pace at which the construction has been going.

The stadiums are scheduled to be finished in June.

Security Concerns

Security is yet another major concern. The recent case of shifting IPL to South Africa once again leaves us with the question, "Would it be truly safe?"

To avoid any Lahore-like attack, the Centre has sanctioned nearly Rs 330 crore to Delhi Police to upgrade its inventory and equipments, which includes X-ray scanners, Door Frame Metal Detectors, Hand Held Metal Detectors, vehicles, communication equipment, etc.

Home secretary G.K. Pillai has ensured that there would be 2,000 CCTV cameras operating on the roads apart from those inside the competition venues to ensure the safety of the athletes, visitors and the citizens. There seems no credible threat to the Commonwealth Games, yet the government is taking all precautions.

Though Michael Fennell is satisfied about security arrangements here, yet he is still concerned about ticketing, food quality, logistics and accommodation.

Traffic in Delhi

A lot has been done, yet the need still prevails. The Indira Gandhi International Airport has witnessed the formation of the longest runway in Asia, 4.43 meters, for double sided landing and takeoff to accommodate the huge air traffic. A six-lane national highway NH8 has been built for well connectivity with the airport to ensure a better transport for the visitors.

Are You Game for the Track Less Traveled?

Crude hits an all time high and the price of gas is rising faster than the fumes escaping from my open gas cap. Editors rush to publish gas saving tips, "check the tire pressure, tune-up the car, take the junk out of the trunk." And they go on, you've heard the tune.

There is a contrarian view. Over inflate the tires, put extra stuff in the trunk (helmet, tools, driving gloves), check the suspension and the brakes, and pray the nut holding the steering wheel doesn't lose it going into the turns.

Soon you could be hitting the track with a full tank of over-priced premium. It's flat out pedal to the metal on that next acceleration run. Just thinking about it makes your heart race. The arm twitches as if the stick shift for a dogleg five speed is inches away from your office chair.

No doubt some automobile owners are having more fun than others. How so? Each year auto clubs sponsor driving events on numerous racetracks throughout the country. Within the last year members of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America ran full-throttle at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, not to mention the dozens upon dozens of autocross events held throughout the country.

More than likely, there are several such events in your area. Greg Calabro is one organizer and he said, "Last year I organized the Mid-Atlantic Defensive Driving School and Mini-Autocross sponsored by the New Jersey Section. We had many newcomers to the event and you should have seen the grins, ear to ear."

Time trials, autocross, and the acceleration run. Yes, another sport and another vocabulary to master. Here's some of the lingo and a few things to keep in mind if you're game for the track less traveled.

First Things First: Performance and defensive driving classes are offered at almost all of the driving events. Instruction often takes place both in the classroom and on the track. You'll gain essential knowledge from experienced professional instructors in a non-threatening environment. Consider a class mandatory before taking your first lap around the track.

Silver Bullet: Long before you hear the sound of the starter's gun, your car needs a thorough inspection. Tires, suspension, and brakes must be in excellent working order along with other mechanical systems. Even if you're the world's best do-it-yourselfer have your mechanic conduct a complete inspection of your vehicle before taking your car to the track. A second opinion can't hurt. And of course, while the car is on the lift have your pit-crew tune it up.

Time Trials: Strap on your helmet and grab the wheel. It's your turn to test your driving skill and your car's performance against the clock. The fastest time around the track wins. These solitary jaunts are popular venues. Automobiles are rated based on their class (model, engine size, etc.); there's a winner in every class.

Autocross: Autocross events are low to medium speed auto racing challenges that are often held on large parking lots and airport runways. The autocross tests your ability to circumvent a course marked by those lovely orange cones. You'll likely suffer a time deduction as you abuse a few cones on your first attempt.

Acceleration Run: Yellow, yellow, yellow - green! That's right, the acceleration run is akin to a drag race. It's all about achieving maximum speed in the shortest amount of time while traversing a fixed distance.

Helmet: Helmets are required and loaner helmets are usually available. Events sponsored by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and other organizations have specific requirements for helmet ratings. No, your bicycle helmet won't do, but your motorcycle helmet might. Check with the event organizer for specific requirements.

A Few of the Sports That Will Be Showcased at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games are just around the corner with athletes from all around the world getting ready to compete for the gold medal. The winter Olympics are quite a bit smaller than the summer Olympics as there are less options for winter sports played as in the summer Olympics. There are also less countries and athletes competing as some countries do not have these sports or the weather or terrain to sustain a winter sport. This does not always stop athletes, however, as evidenced by the Jamaican bob sledding team years ago. They took strong runners and athletes from Jamaica and taught them how to bobsled using a wooden cart on wheels. Their entry into the Olympics was a great crowd pleaser. This article will talk about some of the different events at the Olympics performed by some athletes like the Telluride ski instructor that teaches Telluride ski lessons and will be competing in the giant Slalom event.

Ice hockey is one of the favorite fan spectator sports to see at the Olympic Games. One of the most famous gold medal final games was the 1980 game of the USA versus Russia where the US came out on top. It had always been a sport for just men but now women's ice hockey is also an Olympic sport. Other forms of skating sports that are popular are speed skating, ice dancing and figure skating. These sports also draw big crowds to their competitions.

The USA team has always had top performers in these events as well with Apolo Anton Ohno competing in his third Olympic games this year in speed short track skating. Figure skating greats in the past have been Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton and Nancy Kerrigan who missed out on getting gold when her competitions boyfriend injured her in an attack the day before competition.

Some of the sports that people love to watch are the ones that they only get to see on the Olympics like bobsledding, biathlon or curling. These lesser known and popular sports get their spotlight during the Olympic Games where they can show off their abilities and talents in sports that are not normally played in every town or state. Bobsledding and skeleton are exciting and fast races where a sled speeds down an icy tube to the finish. In order to find athletes for these sports some coaches go to other states to seek out younger kids that may have an interest or knack for it. This happened in Colorado where the US skeleton team put on a demo and got some interested kids involved. This ended up producing two of the athletes at the last Olympic Games. Curling is a sport that is mainly played in Northern Minnesota and is a calmer sport very similar to bocce ball but on ice.

Downhill ski racing and Nordic skiing are also big sports in the winter games. The downhill skiers and snowboarders love speed and an element of danger and the Nordic skier have extreme stamina and endurance.
